McDonnell Douglas MD-80 ve MD-90 çift motorlu ticari jet uçaklarıdır. Her ikisi de DC-9 dan türetilmiştir. MD-80'ler 1980 yılında piyasaya sunulmaya başlanmış, 1989 yılında da MD-90'lar geliştirilmiştir. 1998 yılında ise yerlerini Boeing 717'ye bırakmışlardır. 717'nin orjinal ismi MD-95'dir ancak McDonnell Douglas—Boeing evliliği sonrası yeni ismini almıştır. 23 Mayıs 2006 tarihinde son iki Boeing 717 siparişinin teslimi ile DC-9 uçak ailesinin 41 yıllık sona ermiştir.

The Boeing MD-80, a quiet, fuel-efficient twinjet, was certified by the Federal Aviation Administration in August 1980 and entered airline service in October 1980. Its Pratt & Whitney JT8D-200 engines, combined with its efficient aerodynamic design, allow the MD-80 to meet all current noise regulations while producing operating costs among the lowest in commercial aviation.
Four MD-80 models -- the MD-81, MD-82, MD-83, and MD-88 -- are 147 feet, 10 inches (45.08 meters) long and accommodate a maximum of 172 passengers. The MD-87 is 130.4 feet (39.76 m) in length, with a maximum passenger capacity of 139. Wingspan for all models is 107 feet, 10 inches (32.88 m). The MD-80 was produced at the Long Beach Division of Boeing Commercial Airplanes until December 1999.
The MD-80's nonstop range is from 1,500 to 2,700 statute miles (2,410 to 4,345 kilometers), depending on the model. The MD-81's maximum takeoff weight is 140,000 pounds (63,503 kg); the MD-82's and the MD-88's are 149,500 pounds (67,812 kg). The longer range MD-83 has a takeoff weight of 160,000 pounds (72,575 kg). The MD-87's maximum takeoff gross weight is 140,000 pounds (63,503 kg), with an option to 149,500 pounds (67,812 kg).
Operators range from the largest foreign and domestic trunk carriers to new startup airlines and charter operators. Swissair and Austrian Airlines began the first service, while American Airlines operates the largest number of MD-80s, a fleet of 275. In addition, 35 MD-80 airplanes were assembled and are operating in the People's Republic of China.

- On December 1, 1981, an Inex-Adria Aviopromet MD-81 crashed into Corsica's Mt. San Pietro during a holding pattern for landing at Ajaccio's Campo dell'Oro Airport. All 180 passengers and crew were killed.
- On August 16, 1987, Northwest Airlines Flight 255, an MD-82 crashed shortly after takeoff from Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport due to flightcrew's failure to use the taxi checklist to ensure the flaps and slats were extended for takeoff according to the NTSB. All crew and passengers were killed with the exception of a 4-year old girl.[12]
- On December 27, 1991, SAS flight 751, an MD-81, OY-KHO "Dana Viking" crash landed at Gottröra, Sweden. In the initial climb both engines ingested ice breaking loose from the wings, which had not been properly de-iced before departure. Both engines were destroyed, leaving the aircraft with no propulsion. The aircraft landed in a field and broke in three parts. No fire broke out and all aboard the plane survived.
- On June 1, 1999, American Airlines Flight 1420 overshot the runway and crashed into the banks of the Arkansas river, while landing in severe weather conditions at Little Rock Airport. Eleven people, including the captain, died.
- On January 31, 2000, Alaska Airlines Flight 261, an MD-83, crashed in the Pacific Ocean, due to the inadequate maintenance of the jackscrew assembly.[13]
- On October 8, 2001, SAS flight SK686, a MD-87 with tail number SE-DMA, collided with a small Cessna jet during take-off at the Linate Airport, Milan, Italy. The Linate Airport disaster left 114 people dead. It has been established that the cause of the accident was a misunderstanding between air traffic controllers and the Cessna jet, and that the SAS crew had no role in causing the accident. Another factor was the fact that the ground movement radar was inoperative at the time of the accident.
- On November 30, 2004, Lion Air Flight 538, an MD-82 crash landed in the Adi Sumarmo Airport in Surakarta and overran the end of the runway. There were 25 fatalities.
- On August 16, 2005, West Caribbean Airways Flight 708, an MD-82 crashed in a mountainous region in northwest Venezuela killing all 152 passengers and eight crew.[14]
- On September 16, 2007, One-Two-GO Airlines Flight 269, a MD-82, crashed at the side of the runway and exploded after an apparent attempt to execute a go-around in bad weather at Phuket International Airport. Eighty-nine of the 130 people on board were killed.[15][16]
- On September 28, 2007, American Airlines Flight 1400, an MD-80, landed safely after the left engine of the aircraft caught fire. The flight took off from Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, heading for Chicago. NBC News reports that the same jet was involved in an incident at JFK Airport in New York in 2003. In that incident, the plane landed without the front landing gear. No one was hurt in that incident.[17]
- On November 30, 2007, Atlasjet Flight 4203, an MD-83, crashed Friday in the southwestern province of Isparta, Turkey, killed all 56 people aboard. The wreckage of the plane, which was flying from Istanbul to Isparta, was found in the village of Cukuroren.[18]

Atlas Jet'in filosunda MD serisi uçak mevcut değil. (Kiralananlar hariç.) Onur Air'in 9 adet uçağı MD ve bunlardan birisi Samsun-İstanbul seferini gerçekleştiriyor. Pegasus Air'in MD serisi uçak mevcut değil.
